Fashion: Winde Rienstra
Winde Rienstra is a talented fashion designer born in the Netherlands. She won for her collection ‘Without Title’ the Dutch Design Idols award in 2007, but what has Winde Rienstra been up to since then?
She decided to enter The Green Fashion Competition of last November of 2010. This annual event is under the patronage of Holland’s Ministry of the Economy and Agriculture. It was a good choice of Rienstra to compete since it earned her a spot in the finals. All the finalists got €1250, – to make two complete outfits and their final business plan. Winde Rienstra entered the competition because she works by the slow-fashion principle. According to the designer her designs are a balance between fashion and art, but remains sustainable. In a way it’s green haute couture.
Her work is easily recognizable because of her choice of materials, shapes and construction. The meticulous setting of forms gives rise to a certain tension, a movement in the ‘visual field’. The combination of different materials results in an ensemble of the unexpected and that creates a perfect unity. This is because they ae both conceived on the basis of the same attitude, taking account of the specific qualities of the material and craftmanship. Her competition entry seeks the beauty of essentials, an almost invisibly perfect combination of order, proportion and rhythm with a twist of sci-fy. See her two outfits for the compition down below.
In a world overwhelmed by images, her outfits radiate creativity and craftsmanship. Rienstra’s work is almost timeless because its source of inspiration is the play of shape that is combined with old techniques. The concurrence of presence and absence thus achieved gives it a classic modernity. Unfortunately she didn’t win The Green Fashion Competition, but she is definitely one designer to keep in mind.
